BASES Recruiting 2009-2010

“The best way to get connected and launch your career is through BASES. VCs and startups want to get to Stanford and they do it through BASES.” – Erik Straser, Mohr Davidow Ventures, BASES President 1998

Why Join BASES?

Being a part of BASES offers you the chance to participate in a premiere entrepreneurship organization. Recognized as a leader internationally, nationally, and in the Bay Area, BASES offers an experience no other on-campus organization can offer.

BASES Leadership Recruiting – Organizational Structure:

BASES Leadership consists of the President (or co-Presidents), Chief Financial Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, and ten teams, each comprised of officers and Vice Presidents.

BASES Leadership is a very tight-knit community of aspiring student entrepreneurs, and we try our hardest to create a great experience by giving students very close access to our alumni and mentorship network as well as exclusive events that foster community and personal development.

Co-Presidents: The Co-Presidents serve as the leaders and representatives of BASES. The people assuming this role are responsible for recruiting people for the organization, leading the Executive Board throughout the year, and providing overall direction and vision. The Co-Presidents are also a liaison between the Executive Board and the Board of Advisors.  The Co-Presidents for 2009-2010 are Ricky Yean and Alvin Tse.

Executives (VPs & CxO): Each team within BASES is led by a Vice President or Co-VPs.  Each VP and CxO sits on the Executive Board and works directly with the Co-Presidents. All activities related to a particular team are overseen by the VP of that team, including recruiting Officers for the team, assigning specific roles to Officers, and overall determining direction and vision for that team.  Executive applications are due May 8, 2009.  Instructions on applying listed at the bottom of this document.

Officers: Teams within BASES (see team descriptions below for more information about the teams within BASES) are composed of a VP and a number of Officers. Candidates need to apply to the Officer position and express a preference for the team they wish to join. The VPs are responsible for choosing a team of Officers. Officer applications are due May 8, 2009. Instructions on applying listed at the bottom of this document.

BASES Executive Team Descriptions:

Chief Financial Officer (CFO): POSITION AVAILABLE

The CFO manages all of BASES finances, one of the largest accounts for any student groups at Stanford. It would be your responsibility to oversee budgets for each team throughout the year and to handle the financial portion of the relationship between sponsors and award winners. This position provides high-level involvement with all of BASES’ divisions and valuable leadership experience as part of the executive team.

Chief Marketing Officer (CMO): POSITION AVAILABLE

BASES is looking for a SUPER MARKETER!  We are the most high-spirited entrepreneurship group on campus, and we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about entrepreneurship and passionate about marketing to help us get the word out about BASES!  This position will be working closely with the co-Presidents to put together a consistent branding strategy, and is definitely not your typical “flyer-making” job (design ability is still a huge PLUS).

Technology: OFFICERS POSITIONS AVAILABLE

The Technology Team works closely with every team within BASES to develop solutions that will leave a lasting impact and legacy on the organization. This would be valuable learning experience in system administration, web design and infrastructure design and implementation. This past year we launched a redesign of the website and hope to build on this next year by exploring solutions for group collaboration, knowledge management and integration, and a more scalable way to get information out to our more than 5,000 community members. This is a unique opportunity to interface with every officer in BASES as well as BASES alumni at startups and companies and work together to build solutions to problems facing many growing organizations. Experience with server administration, PHP, MySQL and web design are a plus, but we are open to shaping projects based on your unique technical skill set.

Business Development: OFFICERS AND VP POSITIONS AVAILABLE

The Business Development Team is the engine behind all programs powered by BASES.  The team optimizes values for current sponsors and seeks opportunities to bring in new and a diverse set of sponsors, ranging from venture capital firms, social enterprises, law firms, corporations, and others.  The team also formalizes partnerships with community organizations around the world.  We are looking for individuals who enjoy and thrive in meeting others and exploring areas of common interest.  We are looking for someone who is presentable but also loves figuring out how to satisfy customers (sponsors).

Community Development: OFFICERS AND VP POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Community development is a top priority of BASES. If you want to create interactive events that maintain and grow the entrepreneurial community, the Community Development team has incredible opportunities waiting for you. The E-Challenge team is responsible for carrying out the challenge and raising the quality of the overall competition.  This means higher number of participants and better value-added through the associated workshops and mentorship services.  The E-Challenge team interacts closely with BASES sponsors and judges consisting of the valley’s most renowned venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, and must deliver a highly professional experience.

Social Entrepreneur’s $50K Challenge [website]: OFFICERS AND VP POSITIONS AVAILABLE

The Social Entrepreneur’s Challenge (“Social E-Challenge”) powered by BASES succeeded in launching Stanford’s first-ever social venture business plan competition and created tremendous excitement from students across campus. Throughout the academic year, the Social E-Challenge team organizes workshops on social entrepreneurship, arranges mixers so that people with business ideas can find team members, develop a mentorship program so that teams in the competition gain valuable professional expertise to help sharpen their entries, and run a competition that takes place over three rounds. The first round of the competition is typically the submission of a short executive summary of a business idea, while the second and third rounds involve presentations in front of judges. This is an opportunity to define what Social Entrepreneurship is, to network with other prominent players in the field and to form a network of social entrepreneurs.
