Stanford eHorizons

Program Overview

The Stanford eHorizons Program is a structured initiative that teaches students about each step of the entrepreneurial process. Participants will tour top Silicon Valley start-ups along with venture capital firms and incubators. The program will be focused around specific industrial/technological areas that will give students access to industry professionals, emerging technologies, and start-up companies. The program is for Winter and Spring 2009 and the initial focus areas chosen for Winter are Bio and Clean Technologies. BASES will be partnering with Energy Crossroads and Stanford Biodesign.

Program Participants

Participants will be chosen from the Stanford undergraduate body as well as business, law, medical, masters, and PhD students. eHorizons encourages the membership of BASES, Biodesign, and Energy Crossroads officers, however the program is open to the entire Stanford community. The primary criteria for selecting students to this program will be their interest in entrepreneurship, and in the particular industry/technology focused areas. We are looking for students who have a keen desire to gain a complete education about the industry and learn how to initiate a company within that industry. In addition, we are looking for students who are committed to the program, and who take the privilege of visiting companies seriously.

Program Structure

Students in the program will take field trips to local companies to learn about the functions of the industry and the work conducted in the companies first hand. The students will be given a tour of the company facilities, including labs, manufacturing plants and offices. Following the tour, a presentation by the company representatives will explain the company history, their technology, and products. Afterwards, students will have a chance to interact with the company employees in the Q&A session. Visit lengths will vary, but should be planned for 1.5 hrs. There will be approximately fifteen students per visit; participants will rank their preferences for company visits and every effort will be made to match them with their first choices.

Following each company visit, there will be a program subsidized dinner discussion at a chosen Palo Alto restaurant. This is an informal venue for the students to discuss their thoughts and share their experiences regarding the company visit, the industry, and their interests in entrepreneurship.
